Our Path Towards Tranquility

We’re a small family-owned business trying to simplify and “tranquilify” our life -
we’d love for you to follow along or even join our journey!

We always knew that the traditional path wasn’t for us.

When we met at the Bartle Hall Boat Show in 2011 we were both looking for very different things out of life. One of us wanted to be a millionaire entrepreneur and part-time globe-trotting DJ and one of us just wanted the simple life with 2.5 kids and a white picket fence. Regardless of what we wanted our futures to look like and what we had experienced in the past that had led us against believing in the concept of love at first sight, we felt an instant connection to one another that we couldn’t escape. And as we spilled our hopes, dreams, and baggage with one another (putting all the cards on the table, so to speak), we quickly realized that two very different paths had just become permanently intertwined.

Fast forward a year and we were still avoiding the traditional path. We planned a wedding, although neither of us had ever proposed to the other, and exactly two weeks before our wedding day, those two incredibly pink lines popped up on the pregnancy test confirming that our duo was about to become a trio.

A decade and two premature babies later, we were living the American dream...sort of. We happily resided in Kansas City, MO in a beautiful little neighborhood that feels half rural and half suburban. Jordan was working a traditional 9-5 while I homeschooled our stubborn and too-smart-for-their-own-good little gremlins while designing websites and self-publishing books. We were as close to the normal “traditional” life as we were ever going to get.

But on our 7th Wedding Anniversary, we didn’t get to spend the evening celebrating as we had planned. Instead, we were in the ER waiting to find out if Jordan was having a heart attack. He wasn’t, but for any of you who have had high blood pressure combined with a panic attack, I’m sure you understand why we, and the doctors, were concerned.

After months of doctor’s appointments, trying medications and meditations, and just general brainstorming and heartfelt discussions, we realized just how far we had strayed from our original and nontraditional path. So we determined to back away from the traditional and venture into the underbrush of the unknown.

As we searched for ways to help Jordan relax, I tried to help by providing terrariums, puzzle cubes, meditations, and a zen garden for his office. And while his coworkers made fun of his “trinkets” at first, soon no one was able to resist raking the sand in his zen garden or playing with his betta fish, Jim or fiddling around with his air plant terrarium. And, as Jordan often does with new hobbies, he dove into the rabbit hole of zen gardens and the state of tranquility to find out what was so appealing about these products.

Our house has always been filled with animals, plants, and homemade crafts. Not only do I enjoy filling our house with them, but they help to fight my seasonal depression and make for great learning experiences for our children.

Jordan had never really paid attention to these things before, but the more he learned about zen gardens, plants, terrariums, etc., and the positive effect these can have on your emotional, mental, and physical health, the more interested he became. He texted me one day from work and simply asked “How do you feel about the name ‘Desktop Tranquility?’”

Everything seemed to click and today we are loving our nontraditional path and everything that starting up this brand has taught us.

Because we’re a small family-owned business, we only sell products that we love and believe in. Every single product that is listed within our store has been used and tested within our own home. The zen gardens, the candles, the diffusers, and everything else! If we’re offering it for sale, then it’s something that we enjoy having within our home.

Our goal is to help you create a home or office environment that helps you remember to take a moment here or there to refresh your mind. Working in a space that feels tranquil to you will help you stay motivated and inspired as you move through your day.

Whether you’re using our products or something with a similar aesthetic, we’d love to see how you “tranquilify” your day-to-day life. Tag us in photos on Facebook or Instagram so that we can all share our experiences and maybe find our next favorite tranquility-inspired tool, tip, or decor piece!
